Designer Spotlight: Pamela Johnston It’s only fitting that a jewelry business born in a book club would take its aesthetic cues from the literary world. When Parson’s School of Design graduate Pamela Johnston began to wear the baubles that she worked on after hours to her regular reading circle, the assembled stylish cerebral types had a tendency to lose the plot and start placing orders. Faster than you can say Colette—the free-thinking French writer whose short stories inspired the debut “Gentle Libertine” collection of her Plume jewelry line—the native Californian’s creations were flying off the shelves of a number of fashion-forward Manhattan boutiques. Johnston’s ability to segue seamlessly from delicate designs like her turquoise and brass filigree “Ellen” earrings, to bolder statement pieces such as the tough chic, black onyx and gold plated chain “Nouveaux” bracelet, and the oversize, antique brass leaf motif “Louisa” necklace, mark her as an accessory star in the making. And, with moderate price points that belie the line’s creativity and craftsmanship, it won’t be long until the haute hordes comes running, so we’d “gently” suggest starting your shopping engines ASAP.
